Great ExpectationsGreat Expectations by Charles Dickens
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love coming-of-age stories, and Great Expectations is one of the best ones ever. Pip’s journey from childhood to adulthood, from innocence to experience, and from naiveté to an understanding of the ways of the world is a journey we all take. And at the end, Pip has learned about himself most of all. I hadn’t read Dickens in almost twenty years, but once I got into this, I couldn’t put it down.

P.S. The original ending is better. The second (happy) ending seems tacked on and contrived (which it was).

A Christmas CarolA Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Through his fiction, Dickens shows us a truth that we need to be reminded of every day: that every one of our fellow human beings is a creature of inherent dignity and worth.
