This is a readable historical biography, written not for scholars but for people who just want to know more about Francis. The author tries to cut through the myths and to present, as far as we can tell, the historical Francis.

This book reminded me that the medieval church was corrupt and dominated by politics. Francis's life also made me more thankful for the Book of Romans, especially chapter 3, which clearly teaches that peace with God is not something that our works help us to attain, but a gift that that we are given through faith alone. Despite the many positive aspects of Francis's life, I'm not sure that he understood that truth.
