I know I'm odd, but as my daughters have watched the Disney version of Bambi, I actually enjoyed the mythic quality of the story. It's a lousy movie to watch, but a great movie to "read" if you know what I mean. So when I was with the kiddos at the children's section in the library, I saw the original novel on the shelf and picked it up.
The book is nothing like the cartoon. The real theme of the book is survival. Death and violence (even surprisingly graphic violence) loom large in the book.
What I like most about it is its coming-of-age theme. It has a "Joseph Campbellish" feel about it. The story is about what it means to grow, to mature, to gain wisdom.
